IRAN Behind the Scenes: More than the eye can see

This book contains a collection of ten photo stories about Iran. The stories take the form of interviews between Arash Darvish, an Iranian photographer/graphic artist/interior designer and M. L. Milne, a Canadian educator and writer. The photos are of people or places in Iran—photos with stories “behind the scenes.” You will read about a fiddler who wandered around Iran for many years; a Caspian fisherman and his tattoos; an old woman living a simple life in a mountain village; a bride and some Iranian marriage customs; some historic sites and the people behind them; the hijab as it is worn in Iran; some Iranian food, a martial art, the Blue Bead and an abiotic desert.

These less contentious subjects about Iran are seldom written about in the West and yet it seems that the less contentious issues are what make a society most remarkable. Yes, there are conversations about religion and politics but only as part of bigger pictures.

It is the intention and hope of the authors that this book will (1) educate readers about Iran in a way that is not available elsewhere, (2) increase their understanding of the rich Iranian culture and (3) alleviate misunderstandings that have been generated by the mass media.

You will be reminded that there is much “more than the eye can see” in any photo. Perhaps our book will help you consider what is behind the scenes of other photos, including the ones you take, at any place and any time.
