Having been stranded on and rescued from a deserted island due to a shipwreck, Harry Vane and Jack Pendleton, decide to stay in Australia, even though Harry's employer, Professor Hemmenway, has decided to return to America.

Harry and Jack decide to try their hand at gold mining, and they're quite successful until they run afoul of the outlaw gangs known as the "Bush Rangers." That's when their adventures, trials, and tribulations really begin, and the outcome of their adventure is not at all certain.

Most of Alger's heros either fled from large U.S. cities to smaller towns, or vice versa. This is one of the few where they try to make it in a foreign country.

This edition of the book contains 10 place-, time-, and subject-relevant, iconic, gold-mining illustrations from around the world that are unique to this edition of the book.

Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many formulaic juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age.
