"Why not let me hear you say a last goodbye? How could you, you selfish, fucking dick?"
HE'S DONE, AND NOW IT'S HER TURN TO PERFORM A MIRACLE

Alice finally finds out what Ralph's been doing, and now Ralph's in the hospital and about to be cut loose. He is declared brain dead, and his mother is just waiting for Alice to finally let go.

But Alice is not about to do that. As angry as she is, she is not letting Ralph get away with it. As long as there is life still in his body, she will fight for him. She is not going to let him lay in that mausoleum. She will have him home, in their bed, breathing and living. And no one's going to stop her.

There is an additional miracle worker in the family.

Steph isn't just there because her son needs her. In fact, Ralph does not need her anymore. She was called because Alice needed her. "The women in our family, all, have healing hands. We can read people’s energies and know how exactly to help them. They’re not limitless, our abilities; so, you can hold off on any jokes on that front. We also develop our own particular specializations."

Alice swallowed, slowly, trying not to gulp, like cartoon characters do when in an odd, odd situation. No wonder Ralph never spoke of the mysterious “Steph.”

"My mother was good with wounds; healing them. As long as it's just the flesh, she can mend it. Her mother, my grandma was a known bonesetter, as long as it was within the hour, she was able to set the bones back; clean, usually.” Alice watched Steph scrunch her nose. “...my sister is good with body pains accompanied with fevers. And we all have uncanny hunches that come to us, bright and clear, like fireworks in our minds. One moment we don’t know. We mentally ask a question, and then the answer’s just there. Sometimes, the answer’s there, a feeling, a knowing, before we think a question. That's how I’ve known a long while that my son will die, or might try and die alone."

Abruptly, Alice recalled how Ralph reacted anytime she’d speak of healers, like that time on television, that rainy day in the hotel abroad, although she’d felt for a while that he might have something like that power; so, Alice steered the conversation to another direction.

"What about men in your family? Anyone with the same skills? With ‘healing hands’?"

"They told us our great-grandfather on my mama’s side could read minds, clear as a bell, under some conditions; but, I don't have anything except the stories of my mother and grandparents. Well, not until Ralph came."

Alice froze, and felt ... and felt…
