Mr. Peter Benskin is a young public school graduate with a small private income who joins the police force in London. Matthew runs an extensive gang of jewel thieves with an iron hand, clever disguises, and secret hideouts. Benskin and Matthew battle each other through a series of encounters in high society, and in the confines of a leather merchant in London. A milieu which Oppenheim knew well.
