What Is the Bible and Why Should You Study It?

Knowing more about what the Bible really is can help strengthen your faith. Without knowledge of the nature of the Bible, people have the tendency to drift away from the faith and regard it as a fictional tale that does not give the impact on lives like it actually does.

The Bible is without a doubt the top-selling book in the world. There is no exact number as to how many Bibles have been sold over time, but Guinness World Records has an estimate of 5 billion copies. An author named Russell Ash even believes that there have been more than six billion Bibles sold.

But what is the Bible really? This seems like a silly question, since every person know what the Bible is. Or do they?

The Bible is a collection of books

Contrary to popular belief, the Bible is actually a collection of sixty-six books or religious writings that have been collected for more than two thousand years. There are even some versions of the Bible that have more than sixty-six books. These include the apocryphal books. So, the Bible is not just one book—it is a collection of books.

The Bible cannot be classified into just a single genre. This is because its books can be classified into so many categories. The Bible is not arranged chronologically but rather, it is arranged according to topic.

The Bible is divided into two major parts – The Old Testament and The New Testament. Within the Old Testament are what are referred to as the books of Moses – Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, These books bear the origin of God as well as discuss the origins of the Hebrew nation. They are supposed to be written by Moses. Next are the books that deal with the long history of God’s chosen people, the Hebrews. These books start from Joshua to Esther. The next set of books, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs (Solomon) are referred to as the books of poetry because of their poetic and inspirational content. The books Isaiah to Malachi are referred to as the books of prophecy. These books, though having so many stories, have one theme – the preparation for the coming Messiah, The Lord Jesus Christ.

The New Testament starts with four books known as The Gospels. These books mainly contain the story of Jesus. They are written from four different perspectives and are great books to start with especially for newly baptized Christians. The book of Acts is a narrative of the early church just about when Jesus ascended into heaven. The next books are known as the Pauline epistles. These are letters written by the Apostle Paul to Christians in various parts of the world. These books deal with very important doctrines from which Christians can learn a lot.
