This story is based on true events. All of the emails are as they were written by real people, the back story added is fiction. All names and personal details have been changed.
Angela and Mike have been friends with Maggie and Phil for many years. Maggie is Phil's second wife and the reasons behind his first marriage breakup are sketchy at best. So when Maggie comes to Angela in tears explaining that not only does she believe her husband is cheating on her, but that she might be pregnant too, something Phil will seriously object to, Angela tries to comfort her friend. However Maggie goes ahead and confronts Phil, who not only denies it but also accuses Maggie of getting pregnant deliberately. Maggie is so distraught that she takes off in her car and ends up in a fatal car accident. Phil has no idea that Maggie has confided in Angela and so pours out his grief to her and Mike. Shortly after he tells them he is ready to meet someone else. Both are angry at his attitude and decide that some sort of revenge is necessary. Angela who is a computer trainer hits on the idea of showing Phil internet dating and as Phil is computer illiterate jumps at her suggestion. With the help of Mike, Angela creates a fictional profile and begins an online relationship with Phil. He has no idea that the person he is talking to is not real. Between September and June of the following year Phil falls completely for a woman who does not exist and is totally duped. What Angela and Mike didn't realise at the beginning is that they would find out so much about a man they had called a friend for so many years, things that made them laugh, some that made them very angry and others that just changed the way they looked at Phil for ever.
