The Tragedy of Hamlet, prince of Denmark is tragedy written by English poet, playwright and actor William Shakespeare, who is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world preeminent dramatist. The protagonist is Prince Hamlet of Denmark, son of dead King Hamlet and nephew of King Claudius. Denmark has a feud with neighboring Norway, and an invasion from Norway is expected. Hamlet is Shakespeare’s longest play and one of the most vigorous and influential tragedies in English literature. It was the most popular Shakespeare’s play during his lifetime and is still one of the most performed plays. Creating Hamlet Shakespeare was inspired by the legend of Amleth, retold by 16th century by scholar Francois de Belleforest. Shakespeare may also have drawn on an earlier Elizabethan play, known today as Ur-Hamlet.
