God Loves Maddogs and Greyhounds is a free verse and poetic rhyme of the authors experience during the Vietnam War. “Oliver” was proud to have served his country. He was a soldier and helicopter door gunner where he saw combat on a daily basis as well as going on several late-night classified missions with the 240th Assault Helicopter Company.

James was only twenty-one years old when he received his orders to report to Vietnam. The “Maddogs” were the gun ships. The “Greyhounds” were the slicks that flew the infantry into their appointed destinations, evacuating men from harm’s way and getting fellow soldiers back to a safe land zone.

It was during one of these missions that James Henry Oliver Jr. had a real eye-opening combat experience. Something strong, powerful, and life-changing/altering took place. This reawakening took place during a day mission when “Oliver” felt the presence of an angel; this touch could only be described as if the hand of God himself shifted the helicopter out of harm’s way. This is the moment that has defined the author’s life and a love of God and His son, Jesus Christ, that have stayed with him until this very day.

Read all about the author’s experiences in this unique book of poetry about war and the power of God’s love.
