Burning with anger, following the death of his mother, wealthy collector Michael Leon turns his back on Judaism and his beliefs, choosing Gnosticism as he seeks to find a way to destroy God and release mankind from what he sees as his pitiless grip.

Searching for answers, he is led to a collection of pages that he believes are from the 11th century and may give him what he wants. He pays a small fortune to secure them at auction, but this purchase also brings him into contact with a young woman who tells him that the pages are fake.

Initially distrusting of the mysterious stranger, Michael conducts investigations of his own and discovers she was telling the truth and that they are from a much later time period. Now with the reality of his acquisition setting in, Michael seeks out the girl from the auction.

Ruth is an atheist with a lot of knowledge of books and Hebrew texts in particular. With her help, Michael discovers the whereabouts of the original Book of Creation, and the two head for Israel to try to find the place where it is buried.

Michael and Ruth begin a torrid romance, amidst his growing obsession of finding the book and using it to destroy God. But what is really waiting for him in Israel, is fate itself.
