At a barn dance, another young woman tells her some gossip, which casts doubts on William, and Abby cannot get the gossip to leave her every thought. William then disappears for weeks and Abby finds herself losing any hope of making the romance between them blossom, or even if William feels the same way about her. When he returns, they go for a ride and he tells her everything.
