Rebecca Motte sat down to supper with her three grown up daughters and her niece. They lived alone in the large plantation house in South Carolina. It was January, 1781 and the Revolutionary war had been going on for four long years.
Suddenly there was a pounding at the door.
"Open up in the name of the King!" came the order.
One of the girls gasped. The house slaves stopped serving the supper.
Everyone was scared. The Motte family had given the American army rice, beef, pork and corn. In fact, Rebecca's husband, Jacob, had been killed in the early days of the Revolutionary War. Were the British here to punish them?
Rebecca took a deep breath. Slowly she stood up.
"Open up!" came the order again. There was more pounding at the door. "Open up or we'll break the door down."

Find out how the patriot Rebecca Motte handled it when the British moved into her house.
