Gannek had known his future from the moment he apprenticed himself to the Brethren to seek out and destroy warlocks as a Hunt's Shooter.  Then, a fierce battle leaves him injured severely enough to be severed from their company.  While recuperating, a chance discovery of a family heirloom attracts the attention of a creature of darkness that offers him an unexpected opportunity.  Gannek's interaction with the outside world demands skills he had no interest in developing, knowledge that he lacks, and the forging of new bonds.  Gannek must decide whether to try to regain what he has lost, accept the role offered by an inhuman ally, or struggle to craft a new role and purpose that is uniquely his own.  His choices are complicated by the responsibilities he learns that his heritage imposes on him.
