Gene Stratton-Porter was an American author and naturalist.  Stratton-Porter was also famous for being one of the first women to create a movie studio and production company.  With the income she earned from bestsellers such as A Girl of the Limberlost and Freckles, Stratton-Porter provided support to the conservation of Limberlost Swamp and other areas in the state of Indiana.

Freckles is a novel that is set in the Limberlost Swamp area of Indiana. The story centers around a young Irish man with red hair and freckles who was raised in a Chicago orphanage.

A Girl of the Limberlost is widely considered to be Stratton-Porter's greatest work.  The novel is a sequel to Freckles and is also set around the Limberlost Swamp area.  The book tells the story of Elnora Cornstock, an impoverished young woman living with her widowed mother who holds Elnora responsible for the death of her father.
