This study is a contextual overview to assist anyone researching Cold War industrial facilities in the United States. It gives a broad overview of the structure of the government-owned portion of the defense industrial base and discusses the various trends that affected that structure from the 1940s to the 1980s. This report focuses on production by government-owned facilities. For the purposes of this study, a defense production facility is defined as one that manufactures any article or product for military use and in which the Department of Defense has a significant investment in all or some of the land and/or equipment.
