One of the darkest political decades in the history of the United States followed World War II, when Washington was held hostage by the howling dogs of calumny. Members of Congress warned of the imminent Communist take-over of the United States Government. A state of paranoia and vengeance developed and its fury was directed at imaginary enemies of the State. So-called Communists were ferreted out of the State Department and the United Nations and paraded before the public by an obliging news media. American citizens denied protection under the Constitution and civil laws were condemned by several committees. Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin headed one of those committees, the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. Another committee, the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee, was headed by Senator Patrick McCarran of Nevada. Caught in a wide net cast by those congressional Communist seekers, the intrepid freedom-fighter and champion of the oppressed, Dr. Jack S. Harris of the OSS and prominent member of the UN Secretariat, was vilified and falsely labeled a traitor to his country. Now almost sixty years later, he is hailed by scholars on both sides of the Atlantic as a staunch defender of truth, freedom and democracy. This is his story.
