A very strange looking animal hatches in the thick brush in Emmy Budd's back yard.
The animal becomes too large for Emmy or T.J. to handle and somewhat vicious as T.J. soon learns. Emmy's father takes the animal to a laboratory that studies mutations in the animal world brought on by climate changes. As it grows, the animal only tolerates Emmy, the one who took care of it in its first week of life. In Emmy's absence, the "beast" terrifies everyone at the laboratory where it is being observed by disappearing and reappearing in strange forms. As Emmy and T.J. recover from this nightmarish experience, a rare pygmy white elephant is kidnapped from a local circus. Both Emmy and T.J. on separate occasions think they've seen and heard the elephant in hiding. Or is it their imagination running wild again?
