This is a story of sibling rivalry in a large working class family of Brooklyn, New York in the mid-twentieth century. Their two oldest boys came of age during the Great Depression and World War II and early in their youth became rivals for the limited bounty of their hardscrabble existence

The handsome and gifted first born, successful in whatever he did from an early age onward, contracts a fatal illness during a stint in the Navy. This sentence of death only becomes known to the family after the two brothers have a serious falling out when they both fall in love with the same beautiful neighborhood woman.
