A Fantasy novel for 8-12 year-olds
Gwen, a Welsh girl, meets a strange half-human called Perewulf in the forest, who asks her to help him save his red dragons from extinction. She takes home the last egg, and when the dragon hatches she calls him Prince.
Perewulf tells Gwen that Prince must be mated with an English green dragon, to save the race. She flies off on Prince's back and meets Dane, a boy who works at a dragon stud run by an evil man, Logar.
Prince falls into Logar's clutches and Gwen is caught trying to rescue him, then put to work in the dragon stables. She is horrified by the cruel methods Logar uses to train his dragons for the fighting ring.
Logan puts Prince to stud with Queenie: Princess and Rex are born. The dragon family takes flight, with Dane and Gwen on their backs. But Logar sends his black cannibal dragons after them . . .
This novel was short-listed for the Kathleen Fidler Award.
