PROLOGUE

"So you're Christian's wife," Emily, who was the daughter of one of New York's oldest newspaper heirs, had asked her after the meeting.

"Yes, I am," Kingston said leerily. Navigating this group was akin to walking through a pit of vipers. You never knew when one was going to strike out at you with their venomous fangs.

"It surprised me too," Kingston replied wearily, tired of defending her quick marriage to the Grant billionaire, one of New York's most eligible bachelors. "But, that's what real love does sometimes; it takes you by surprise and you just run with the feeling."

"I've known Christian for years, and he can be a bit impetuous at times. And, he doesn't hesitate to change courses once he realizes the error of his ways -- in business and in ah … personal matters," Emily said.

"Funny you should mention the word impetuous," Kingston responded with a saccharine-sweet smile on her face. "We were just discussing that the other night as we lay in bed. If I remember correctly," she continued as she placed her right forefinger in the middle of her chin as if she was trying to recall his exact words, "Christian said thank goodness I came into his life because I made life much more impetuous -- which made his former life seem drab in comparison."

"I believe his exact words were, 'Life was drab and predictable before you came along, my darling.'"

Emily's color heightened and she turned on her heel and marched across the room to Margeaux.

Dear lord was she ready to be done hanging out in this snake pit! Kingston thought as she gathered the notes she'd taken and stuffed them into her bag.

"I told you'd we'd have our chance, fair Kingston," Thomas, her husband's brother said. She could smell the alcohol on his breath.

"What are you doing here? How did you get in?" she asked.

"Why I have a key, of course. I told you, my brother and I share everything – including keys to each other's residences," he said, advancing on her.

"I think you'd better leave," Kingston said, frightened but unwilling to let him see it. "Now," she said sternly.

"I'm not going anywhere until I get what I came for," Thomas said, standing directly in front of her.

"And what is that exactly?" Kingston said, standing her ground.

"Why you, of course dear sister-in-law," he said, grabbing her by the waist and pulling her hard to him.
###

"And just who do you think my brother is going to believe – you or me?" Thomas said smugly. "Blood is thicker than water Kingston, especially Grant blood. You're the interloper here; the gold digger. So feel free to test my theory at any time. In fact, I welcome it."

The tenuous trust she and Christian had built over the last few months flashed through her mind. Their love was deepening, but she wasn't sure it could stand the test of something like this.

Would Christian believe her?

Would it destroy the foundation of what they were building?

Or, would it cost her everything?
