An interview between an elderly veteran named Henry Holt and a young newspaper reporter sparks off a reliving of the past for him. The memories which have for so long lain dormant become vivid within his mind and he is able to remember most of his experiences up until a certain point. He was gravely wounded during the Battle of the Bulge and local newspapers from the era reported that during the conflict he and another soldier prevented a Panzer Division from moving into position in the heart of the battle.

In his pocket he has carried an exquisitely wrought, small, medieval key since the end of the war without ever knowing why he has it or who gave it to him. After the interview he realizes that he wants to find out more than ever before what transpired during the final month of his exemplary military career. As he begins to patiently relive his memories he realizes that the mystery of the small key and the final actions for which he was highly decorated will reveal themselves to him in a much unanticipated fashion.
