It's a snowy Christmas Eve and Willie Halliday, the non-drinking, vegetarian sleuth finds himself working for Lord Fontwell, a senior steward of the Jockey Club on a delicate case involving blackmail. But as always with Willie things are a little more complicated than they seem. The case also involves a high-powered business man and a young, male ex-employee of his. A young man with a chip on his shoulder who also happens to be involved with an extreme right-wing political party run by the odd psychopath. As usual Willie is not short of lovely women involving themselves in his life, including Pandora Drummond, a writer of romantic fiction. Phoebe, Willie’s Amazonian secretary who reputedly boxed for Roedean, is not amused when her boss comes under the writer’s spell. The case turns violent and Willie needs all the help he can get from Phoebe and the noble Lord to bring the case to a satisfactory, but tragic, conclusion.
