Deputy Marshal Caitlyn Masters and her partner are in the process of transporting a fugitive from Las Vegas to Fairfax, Virginia. It seems like an everyday transport, nothing out of the ordinary.
The prisoner, Terrance Riga, a fugitive and a known sex offender, was picked up a week earlier at a kid’s pizza joint. He was employed happily as one of those big stuffed animals; he entertained the kids.
As they walked out of the airport toward the transport van a group of unknown assailants attack the three of them. When the smoke clears Caitlyn’s partner and the pedophile are dead. Left with a severe head injury, Caitlyn becomes consumed with finding her partner’s murderers.
The Marshal Service hasn’t lost a deputy in the line of duty in over six years. This case must be solved quickly. They turn to the FBI who assigns Special Agents Luke D’Palma and Kevin Stewart to assist in solving the execution-style murders.
As the investigation begins, Caitlyn identifies one of the shooters as Jeb White. Not only is White, wanted for murder, but he is one of the Marshal’s most wanted fugitives. It quickly becomes clear that the murder was a hate crime and there is a possible connection to the murders of several other pedophiles on the east coast. A group of vigilantes under the leadership of Jeb White is suspected.
As the investigation continues, evidence seems to point to Masters as an informant to the vigilante group. Molested as a child, Caitlyn’s finds her past beckons the self-proclaimed justice seekers to entice her to join their self-righteous cause. Caitlyn must prove her innocence while battling her own demons, which draw her toward the infamous group.
Although attracted to Kevin Stewart by his wit and unconventional personality, she resists a relationship with him. But her deep-seated emotion and untapped passion pull her toward him. Afraid of the feelings, that have been buried below the surface for so long, she struggles with her emotions both for him and about herself.
The deadly game of cat and mouse involves a high-speed car chase and ends with a fire fight finale. Caitlyn comes to terms with her past and finds justice for her dead partner, but not before she must put her life and those closest to her at death’s door.
