Harper Paget's DARK JOURNEYS, which began in Atlanta in DARK NEIGHBORHOODS and continued in China in DARK CORRIDORS now bring him back to the small river town of Warrick in Illinois (USA) where he spent his youth. This time he is joined in his struggle with the shape-shifting, time-traveling creatures by colleagues Corey Braedon, a younger film instructor who teaches at the university where Harper once taught, and Lawrence Reuter, farmer and instructor of English at a community college near Warrick. Also involved in the horrible events occuring in town are Selena Herrmann, former high school teacher, and Elaine, Lawrence's wife whose brother is found murdered by something unknown to them.

When Harper arrives from China, he tells them who they are facing, not the River Witch of local legend but the insidious enemies of his family for generations who threaten the entire town where he grew up.

The center of events turns out to be the local but closed movie theatre, owned by Corey's family.

The creatures-- adept at robbing memories and manifesting illusions -- are subtle and relentlesss, and soon their revenge will be complete. They not only threaten the citizens of a small Mississippi River town but humanity at large.
