Dr. Julia Reesman is a "cut girl," a rookie Medical Examiner and a woman with much to prove. To the world. To herself. That she can put the shadowy effects of PTSD behind her. When she's called in as an outside consult to a disturbing multiple homicide at a quiet country estate she panics. It is a case so bloody and disturbing that many in law enforcement view it is a “black hole” and back away, a case destined to go cold from the get-go. But then she sees it not as a dead end, but maybe a chance to kick-start a stalled career.

The last thing she needs is to be drawn into the clandestine world of Det. Ty Connell, Major Crimes Division Boston PD, Intel Unit, InSource Squad. After a rocky start, they realize that they’ve been thrown together into a nightmarish world to deal with an unknown and seemingly unknowable―new kind of evil. It quickly becomes a case of Julia and Connell against the world where the only thing known for certain is that timelines are tightening and the killer―or killers―unknown will strike again soon...and have also targeted them!

Connell follows a lead to a creeped out old farm house on a solo surveillance mission, to scout the site and decide whether to a SWAT approach later. When Julia finds out that he’s gone alone she has a powerful premonition: something’s going to happen. Ty’s going to need help. Julia has to scramble to figure out exactly where in hill country he’s headed and race there. What she finds and has to fight her way through when she gets there is unforgettable. Among other horrors, an officer who had raced there earlier is hanging from a tree and bleeding out… and Connell is about to be next. What happens next no one could see coming.
