The doctor, knowing that he would fail, ran through the small streets, hoping against all hope that he might be able to at least save the two siblings. This time he was going to do the right thing, even if he failed, even if he was killed for it. He refused to stand by and let more people die, refused to be haunted by their dead faces in his sleep.
Robert Finch reached the house and knocked on the door. No answer. He ran to the back, hoping that perhaps a window might be opened. The sounds of the mob reached him. The shouts were getting louder with every second. Desperation and fear surged through Robert as he lifted a stone and threw it into the kitchen window. Glass broke into a thousand fragments. What was he doing? He was too late; he knew it before he threw the rock. He’d only get himself killed.
At last, Robert heard Fredrick’s dragging feet make their way to the front door. Fredrick just reached the kitchen when the door broke and let the blood hungry mob in.
Robert sat silently under a bush and listened to the angry screams, the killing and then silence.
Tears rolled down Robert’s face. He failed.
Would he have the courage to even try to save the next unfortunate victim of this madness? Did he do everything to save Fredrick? Or his children?
