Norway’s fractured coastline hides seemingly endless fjords and many with numerous crooked finger branches. It is a great destination for cruise ships offering hours of scenic cruising in very sheltered waters. The ports of call are tucked in amongst the islands or down the deepest fjords, sometimes 100 miles down.
This book covers the Vestlandert, the westerly region bordering the North Sea from Stavanger to Trondheim. This is classic fjord country, the region attracting the most cruise activity. The destinations covered include Stavanger, Bergen, Molde, Haugesund, Flåm, Eidfjord, Trondheim, Kristiansund, Olden, Geiranger, and Ålesund.
There is plenty to see and do in all these ports and the cruise lines offer plenty of shore excursions. These are outlined here in this book. Norway is an expensive country and shore excursions are expensive. For a lot of people the ships tours are ideal, there is no planning, no worry so just pay up and go. Even so, the tours are often conducted at a slow pace, and there is always somebody slow to return and time ticks away taking up far too much time of your day. Time in port is limited and this book includes practical details to show you how to make the most of your day, see far more of the sites and often do the same excursions as the boat but at far lower cost.
There are exciting excursions in all these destinations but three ports stand out: Bergen, Flåm and Ålesund. In all of these you will need to plan your day carefully to make the most of your day.
