When we come across a text, it needs to be read, understood, and interpreted. To a layman it can be a simple task, because he happens to be basically concerned with the message, meaning, or the story of the given text, but to a student of literature and linguistic, it happens to be more than merely reading and understanding a given text.

There happen to be different approaches to literature, and with the knowledge of those approaches, a student can analyze a given text in many different ways.

Let me make it very simple through this example. The simple text reads as follows:

The old steel tumbler was lying on the round table in the middle of the room, as if moaning over the absence of the other utensils which had already been taken out of that small room, after the departure of the four souls who had spent the night drinking and chatting.
