"I'm talking to a man who's had four wives and keeps a wolf!"

Penniless journalist Impey Dalrymple is glad for the chance of a job, until she realises its implications.  She would like to refuse the offer, but Jules Challenger, a debt-collector, has ways of persuading people to work for him.  The attractive charistmatic man, who keeps a vulture as well as a wolf,  wants to know why and who has vandalised his firm's symbol, a prized sculpture of his first wife, Flick.  Does the culprit bare a personal grudge against him or is it a sign of opposition to Jules's plans to use the local golf club as a wildlife park.

Beautiful, popular Flick is a powerful lady at the golf club to which Impey belongs.  Any investigation into Flick's life impacts on Impey's relationships.  As the job tears into her friendships, Impey becomes more nervous about her own involvment with Jules.  The disappearance of his wealthy god-mother plus the deaths of a couple of his ex-wives make her fear for her own safety.
