This book have broadly outlined the major schools of criticism with particular emphasis on representative writers of each school. The essays chosen for analysis are treated in detail highlighting the prominent ideas in each essay. In other words, a detailed summarized version of each is provided. The book has been divided into seven sections starting from New Criticism. Classical Medieval and Romantic Criticism have been excluded since there are enough and more books on these areas. Formalism, Speech-Act Theory, Reader- Response, Modernism, Postmodernism, Structuralism, Poststructuralism, Phenomenology, Hermeneutics, Marxist and Feminist Criticism are the areas covered. Apart from a general introduction to the various schools, individual treatment has been given to thirty-four essays. Given the scope of the book, it is well nigh impossible to scrutinize every theorist who has contributed to a theoretical movement.
