SYNOPSIS
COMING OUT OF EGYPT

With storm clouds threatening, MARVA GARCIA, 17, and her sister JUNE, 13, dump their father’s body in a river near their home in Egypt Village, Trinidad. Hoping to put their painful past behind them, they leave the following day for their aunt’s home in another village. A few days later, their father’s body washes up on the beach near their aunt’s home.
DAVID BOWEN, detective and the new chief of the Point Fortin police station, attends James Garcia’s wake. He meets CICELY STEWART, Marva’s former teacher, and her sister Sheila. David is immediately smitten with Cicely, but she appears uninterested. The autopsy reveals that Garcia died from a blow to the back of the head. Marva finds a job, moves out of her aunt’s home, and enrolls June in school, but has little peace. Fearing that the detective links her to her father’s murder, she turns to alcohol.
David and Cicely fall in love and become engaged, but her father, whom she has been caring for, is afraid that once she marries she will no longer be able to look after him. David discovers that Marva lied to the police about circumstances surrounding her father’s death. That, plus rumors that James Garcia molested his daughters, convinces David that Marva is the only person with a motive for the murder. However, with no eyewitness and no weapon, he has no concrete evidence.
Marva and June continue to get into trouble. June plays truant after David sends a female officer to interview her about her father’s death, and begins spending time with an older man. Marva goes looking for June, finds her with the man and gets into a fight. Cicely, who has become a substitute mother to the girls, always has to bail them out. Frustrated by all this, David decides that Marva is a danger to herself and others. His suspicion increasing, he plans to arrest her for her father’s murder, but, because of Cicely’s love for the girls, he informs her of his plans. She, knowing the girls’ history, becomes enraged.
Regretting her outburst, she goes to the beach the next day to pray for courage to reveal her secrets to David. He goes to her house to patch up their quarrel, but instead meets her father who tells him that Cicely was once a striptease dancer. When David confronts her, Cicely confesses that she too was molested by her father. David still loves Cicely, but doesn’t want a child molester as his father-in-law. He breaks off their engagement, withdraws himself from the case and returns to New York on a leave of absence.
Marva, upset over June’s behavior, overdoses on alcohol and pills, but later accepts Christ as her Savior. Her childhood friend Jason, who has always had a romantic interest in her, takes her to the movies. When he brings her home, he kisses her, but she is unable to respond. Even though she killed her father accidentally, Marva struggles with guilt, but has no one to confide in.
Ashamed of his actions, Cicely’s father goes to New York to beg David’s forgiveness, but he refuses. Mr. Stewart suffers a heart attack, and David later forgives him. Cicely is unaware of all this and when Sheila urges her to attend an award ceremony, she reluctantly agrees. She takes Marva and June with her. David comes on stage, plays their song “Endless Love” and reaffirms his love for Cicely. Even though Marva knows he can still arrest her, she is happy that her teacher is reunited with her fiancé and confident that God will bring her and June out of Egypt.
