“Clever Carter” is a story about a young boy with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
It is a picture book that was written for children, to provide an understanding about the disorder. The book teaches about some of the common behaviors of ASD. Though initially geared towards young children, it grants valuable knowledge to anyone unfamiliar with the disorder.
With its memorable rhythmic flow and pleasant illustrations, it is an excellent teaching tool for teachers and for families living with Autism. It can be used to teach about the Autism Spectrum in general or about an individual child by asking the questions provided at the back of the book. Through discussing the similarities and differences between “Clever Carter” and another individual child, and allowing the children to ask questions themselves, it provides a better understanding of the disorder and allows them to connect on a more personal level.
