Keenan Pidgeon, a disenfranchised deadbeat, begins Thursday morning as - in his own words - “the worst associate in ‘GoodBuy Electronics Superstore’ history”. After being arrested for pilfering video games from his benevolent employer - and a series of absurd choices - his criminal status balloons from ‘petty thief’ to ‘hired burglar’.

Enigmatically, Keenan finds himself the patsy of a banal criminal conspiracy – framing him for the murder of an undercover narcotics detective. The entire Police Department – except the intuitive and driven Detective Giselle Jones - somehow fails to fathom the transparent plot. Keenan is charged with murder and threatened with lethal injection, but after a series of unlikely events frees him from police custody, he naturally seizes the opportunity to prove his own innocence.

With the steady guidance of his attorney, Griff, Keenan sets to the implausible task of clearing his own name by bringing the true killer to justice. Obviously, the conspiracy is entirely Griff’s conception, and his cohort – the venal Detective Carlsburg – is the real murderer. Being cagey enough to not aid Keenan’s endeavor to bring themselves to justice, Griff and Carlsburg manipulate him into seeking out - and eliminating - their rivals in the narcotics trade.

As Keenan gradually awakens to his own naivete, he works - with the help of Detective Jones - to turn the tables on his dubious allies. The result is a cat-and-mouse game - with overt dog-and-pony overtones - followed by an imperious climax and a tangibly profuse denouement, crafted with enough mischief to nurture the detriment of society.

CHUMP’D – An (earnest & genuine) Thriller is the initial novel generated within the protocols of the BBY17836 v.2.0 experiment. The “imaginative algorithm” code-named ‘Bobby Bawbee’ was created to synthesize a novelized rendering of modern, Hollywood thriller films.

While the aim of the experiment was noble - to honor the modern masters of suspense with an engineered homage - corruption within the algorithm resulted in ‘Bobby Bawbee’ becoming “self-aware”. The resulting novel - written from the perspective of a “disillusioned undergrad” - loftily lampoons the movies that inspired it, rather than exhibiting the reverence of which they are all so incredibly worthy.

We’re truly sorry.
