EXCERPT
“You must be exhausted. Come. Lie down,” he patted the space beside him. “Sleep. You’re safe with me tonight.” His words and his very voice rang like a rich, clear bell inside her.
“Safe? What do you mean?” she asked.
He didn’t answer. Instead, he waited for her to be calm enough to approach the bed. When she was within arm’s reach, he held his hand out to her. Cautiously she traced the inky patterns on his arms, finding nothing else but warm skin under her fingertips. Funny that she did not notice these the first night she met him. She could not remember how long his sleeves were, but she should have seen a glimpse of them on his neck or wrists, where the tattoos end. Or started? She must have been too focused on his face and the feel of his body to notice anything else.
Her anxiety ebbed as she finally took his hand and let herself be led to the bed.
He was a man. He was human. No nightmares here.
Saul gently pulled her into his arms. She stiffened. In spite of the warmth of his embrace, his tattoos reminded her of the nightmares she’d been having.
It was too much to think about. Just too much. She wanted to just let go of thinking and just sink into the heat of his body. She sagged against him as she let out a breath and surrendered. He held her close to him, letting her settle in his arms. Once he felt her heart rate slow and her breathing even out, he reached behind him to turn off the light.
She tensed in alarm as the room was plunged into darkness. He felt that.
“Sssh. Don’t be afraid. You’re with me now. I won’t let them get you.” He whispered as he stroked her hair until Cassie faded into sleep.
