The Certainties of Faith is a compilation of ten sermons given by Phineas Bresee in the summer of 1903. It begins with a seven page introduction to what was going on in Bresees life at that time; it highlights the great success Los Angeles First Church had and the work that was going on around the country to begin gathering together a holiness denomination. The sermons are not exegetical in nature; rather, they focus on how holiness operates in the real world. The first sermon, which gives the book its name, sets the stage with a discussion regarding Gods existence. To have faith is not to speculate, but instead is to know something so strongly that you allow it to impact the way you live your life. The rest of the sermons build from this understanding of faith. They discuss how people seek after God and are empowered by Him. Also present throughout the sermons is the idea that God is actively at work in the world; it is because of the divine presence that Gods righteousness is able to work through holiness people to help earth reflect the promised New Jerusalem.
