After a popular third-party presidential candidate is assassinated, cities across the United States erupt into chaos. Twenty-seven-year old Rebecca Green still takes her new foster daughter shopping. The twelve-year old needs school clothes. Besides, West Santa Monica should be safe.

It isn’t. Three men attack in unison on the bright Tuesday afternoon. In the aftermath, Rebecca feels blessed that she and Ivy survived. Los Angeles Detective Oliver doubts the assault was connected to the riots. The men were too skilled, too well-armed. He belieives they weren’t after Rebecca’s Mercedes. They were after her.

Oliver is wrong. After another failed abduction, police and the Greens realize Ivy is the target. But why? The girl is a cipher, a tween who arrived in L.A. four years ago without history or family. Now she’s at risk.

Rebecca’s brother Danny provides the solution. A fisherman who remained in Oregon after his sister left for California, he’s in Marina Del Rey on a trawler. He offers passage north. She convinces her husband, real estate mogul Gregory Green, that taking Ivy and evading police protection is the best  way to keep the girl safe. Unfortunately, Ivy's secrets will soon be revealed.
