His destination tonight, “the stroll”, that area of the city where a small subculture scratches a meager existence from the darkened streets, mostly unseen by proper folks. People who venture here after dark are either desperate or deranged. They are either buying or selling at the very lowest end of the trading spectrum. Only the most basic commodities are available here after dark, those of flesh and blood. On nearly every corner stands a lonely figure, anxiously pacing as the crack cocaine in her bloodstream wanes in intensity. Still she tries to look seductive, all the while oblivious to the dangers of her trade, driven by desperation. The only pimp down here is addiction and there has never been a more sadistic master. Those who fall victim are ravaged by drugs that prematurely wither their faces and wrack their fragile bodies. Their families have long since abandoned any hope for them. They are ghosts. Few people even care if these unfortunate creatures live or die so long as they don't impact the rest of society. What better place for him to unleash the primal urge within him to “hunt”.
Women's bodies are being dumped on the outskirts of Omaha, Nebraska. Police believe they are facing a cold and calculating serial killer. Unfortunately, they have no suspects, no motive, and very little physical evidence. What's worse, they have no idea how many more bodies are out there or when the killer will strike again. Their only clue is that the victims are known street prostitutes, addicted and vulnerable. Step inside the barrier tape with the members of an elite task force and witness the inner workings of a massive serial killer investigation. They'll use advanced crime analysis tools, behavioral science, and good old gum shoe police work. Follow every step in the forensic investigation from gruesome crime scenes through autopsies and watch as the evidence begins to point to a single suspect. You will see the human side of an investigation of this magnitude as well and the toll it takes on those involved. The author is a 30 year veteran of a major police agency and has been directly involved with many such investigations over those years. Although "Carnal Prey" is a work of fiction, the events portrayed are drawn directly from those personal experiences.
