Akofi tried his best to elude his slave owners and the local militia, but they were hot on his trail. He barely managed to make it back to where the other runaways were hiding, but the  gunshot wound he received from a  young  corporal in the island militia ended his life. With him dead, a new leader had to be chosen from among their ranks. If they were captured it was certain death. They had to move fast because Akofi had unintentionally led the soldiers to their hideout.

They still dream of going back to Africa to be reunited with their brethren, but hope is dashed when they are betrayed by one of their own. Their enemy wants to send a strong message to those who might be contemplating escape in the future. A massacre of the worst kind is carried out on men, children and women, whose only crime was being black. Is there hope for this group of runaways? Will any of them live to tell the story?
