Calypso, is a collection of personal family stories, written by David Sedaris. Calypso is highly acclaimed for dark humor and its satirical view of family life. The stories are presented as a collection of essays that give the reader insight into this American family and the incidents surrounding the different family members. David, the second son of slightly dysfunctional parents, is the story teller. The scene is collaborated at his beach house, a family holiday home, on the Emerald Isle, in North Carolina. This collection of essays reveals the tragic death of the children’s mother, an alcoholic who died of cancer and the devastating impact of their sister’s suicide. Tiffany, the youngest sibling had spent many years of battling with addiction and mental illness. David Sedaris adds other dynamics to his view of family life as he grows older and faces the world from a mature, sixty-year-old perspective. A homosexual man, with partner, Hugh Hamrick, David Sedaris looks at gay weddings in his humorous, but supportive way. He observes the growing old process and how life at sixty offers more of a past than a future. A comical observation, but oh so true!
Calypso is about middle age, mortality and the family that he has had a love – hate relationship with over the course of growing up and maturing.  He takes the reader down a road of comical, but real observations of his family. A family not unlike many families out in the social order of today. Sedaris is an acclaimed writer, humorist and Grammy award winner for his audio-books. In 2004 his book ‘Dress your family in Corduroy and Denim reached the New York times non-fiction best seller list. His ability to detect humor and pathos in family situations won him the title of Humorist of the year and he continues to win over audiences with his new collection of essays, in his latest book, Calypso.
