Frances Reed, Fran, is a sixth grader who must confront bullies in her life. She is chased by three dogs (the Three Musketeers) on her way to school in the mornings; and she is picked on by three girls at school. Her mother refuses to fight her battles, insisting that she can deal with these problems head on--insisting that Fran go see the owners of the three dogs. Mr. and Mrs. Wessenfeld, Fran and the lab, cocker spaniel and golden retriever come to friendly terms, resolving the problem with Fran getting a part-time job walking the dogs after school. Fran screws up her courage, calls the leader of the “three amigos”, and reasons with Marcy that they can be team mates without liking one another. Friends and games are won and lost, and conflicts resolved, at least for now.
