Broken Engagement Synopsis.

BECCA is a mid-thirties woman, who is career-driven, independent and ambitious. She meets and falls in love with a man from the northern part of Nigeria. Regardless of advice from friends, Becca continues her relationship with this man. She could not let go of this man, not just because she loves him, but also because he is all she has. Having lost her father and driven away from home by her mother, Becca has no name and no pedigree and it is these things that disqualify her from marrying the man of her dreams.

BASHIR DANTATA is the heir of the Dantata family, an elite family in Kano state. Becca is all he needs in a woman and it does not matter that she is a girl with no family name and not of northern extract. He goes ahead and proposes marriage to her and would have married her without his family’s consent, but a spanner is thrown into their plans. When Bashir is called home to run for the governorship, he finds that he has to marry a woman from his tribe, in order to establish trust in the people of Kano. Not wanting to disappoint his family, he goes ahead with their plan to marry a Muslimah, so as to win the election. He hopes that he can eat his cake and have it by divorcing the woman after the election, but he does not realize that he would fall hopelessly in love with her and never want to leave her.

SAFIYA ABDULLAI is a wild-eyed young lady in Kano. She thinks differently from the average girl from the north. Instead of dreaming of marrying and having babies, she wants to get a Master’s degree and become an intellectual just like her father. Her parents think getting too much education will make her unmarriageable, so after her university degree, they arrange for her marriage to the son of the Emir. But Safiya runs away from her own wedding and this is not just because she wants to get more education, it is also because of the feelings she nurtures in her heart. Some time ago, Safiya met Bashir and had fallen in love with him at first sight, she hopes that one day they would meet again and have a fairytale ending. Her prayers seem to be answered when she stumbles on his photo on the internet and finds out he wants to be governor of the state. She throws herself into campaigning for him on social media and that is how she is noticed by the Dantata family. She marries Bashir without knowing the deal he had made with his fiancee and lover, Becca.

Becca realizes she has been cheated when Bashir falls in love with his wife and breaks all ties with her. But she is not one to let go of her dreams and so, she is determined to marry Bashir at any cost, even to the extent of killing his wife.
