THe only connection betweent the four sections of the book is a short train ride, each of which ends badly. As I look  back on the life and lives I've seen, there seems to be an awful lot of regret. So many, if they admit it or not, wanted more out of life than they got and gave far less than they should have.  An epidemic for the 21st Century.

From his stoop, a boy watches and wonders his Summer away. His world extends no more than a block in any direction. From "all the world he knows", he tries to understand what life might hold for him, and what it is that makes a man.

The author characterizes each day of the week, each month of the year, and seven Holidays. "Monday needs no other appelation than "Monday". "January, why is it you open the play in so cynical a way".
