Shanghai, the economic and financial center of mainland China, is located on China’s eastern coast at the mouth of the Yangtze River. One of the four municipalities under the direct control of China’s central government, Shanghai has two central business districts: Lujiazui in Pudong, and the Hongqiao area in Puxi.

Chengdu is situated on the western edge of the Sichuan Basin. The climate is mild and humid. Rainfall is reliable year round but peaks in summer. As a result of its strategic geographic location, Chengdu acts as the gateway to the southwestern region. Limestone is one of the city’s major mineral resources. Jinan yields limestone of the highest quality, and more types of limestone can be found here than anywhere else in China.

Located in the center of Liaoning, Anshan is a prefecture-level city that is known for its iron reserves and is called the “Capital of Steel.” Anshan is located between Shenyang and Dalian. It is connected to the rest of the country by means of one railway and one highway.

Tianjin is one of China’s four municipalities. It is the primary industrial, commercial and economic center of North China, rivaling Shanghai in the south. Tianjin is also the most populated coastal city in North China.

Fuzhou, on the coast of Fujian, is the province’s capital. It has been nicknamed “Rongcheng” because there are many ficus trees in the area. Fuzhou Port, the nation’s 15th largest port, handled 1.2 million TEUs in 2008.

Luoyang is a prefecture-level city located in the western part of Henan Province. The city borders Zhengzhou, the province’s capital, to the east, Pingdingshan to the southeast, Nanyang to the south, and Jiyuan to the north.

The capital of Central China’s Hunan Province, Changsha is the center of the province in terms of its politics, economy, finance and commerce. It is located in the northeastern part of Hunan and covers an area of 11,819 sq km. The city governs five districts, three counties and one county-level city, and its population totaled 6.59 million at the end of 2008.

Located in China’s Harbin-Daqing-Qiqihar Industrial Corridor, Daqing is among the younger cities of the nation. Its name means “Great Celebration.” Founded in 1959, it was originally a settlement for petroleum workers. Daqing has the largest oil field in China. The crude oil reserves in Daqing amount to 5.6 billion tons, while the natural gas reserves total 57.4 billion cubic meters.

Lhasa, the capital of China's Tibet Autonomous Region, is also the center of Tibet’s politics, economy and culture. The city is located in the middle of southern Tibet at an altitude of 3,650 meters. It is one of the highest cities in the world. Lhasa does not have extremely frigid winters or unbearably hot summers.

Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu Province, is at the center of Gansu’s politics, economy, and culture. Lanzhou is located in the central part of Gansu Province. Mountains lie to the north and south, and the Yellow River passes through from west to the east. Lanzhou is rich in mineral resources.

Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, is the center of Ningxia’s politics, economy and culture. Yinchuan lies in the northern part of Ningxia, east of Helan Mountain, and enjoys a temperate continental climate that is mostly windy and dry.
