Are the "culture wars" over? When did they begin? What is their relationship to gender struggle and the dynamics of class? In Nancy Bauer’s view, most feminist philosophers are content to work within theoretical frameworks that are false to human beings’ everyday experiences. Here she models a new way to write about pornography, women’s self-objectification, hook-up culture, and other contemporary phenomena, and in doing so she raises basic questions about philosophy.

It is ridiculous to think of poems, paintings, or films as distinct from other things in the world, including people. Joining literature and topology—a branch of mathematics—he maps the ways the imagination’s contours are formed by the spherical earth’s patterns and cycles, and shows how the world we inhabit also inhabits us.

Metaphor supposes that an ordinary word could have been used, but instead something unexpected appears. The point of a metaphor is to enrich experience by bringing different associations to mind, by giving something a different life. The prophetic character of metaphor, Denis Donoghue says, changes the world by changing our sense of it.
