Originally published in 1967.This book illustrates how, during the nineteenth century, the idea grew up that the provision of universal education was one of the functions of the state. The volume is also a history of that period of education, discussing the main events and describing the actual conditions of the schools.

This volume discusses school practice and methods in the early twentieth century against their historical background. It covers the curriculum, time-tabling, lesson planning, exams and discipline. Each chapter ends with extensive notes and questions for discussion.

This book does not cover the whole field of Infants’ Teaching but is concerned mainly with general principles and matters which are open to the non-specialist. Some technical subjects such as Physical Education have been omitted but nonetheless the volume provides a thorough (if somewhat dated) introduction to early years education in the first half of the twentieth century.
