Thatched Huts and Stucco Palaces: Peasants and Landlords in 19th-century Nepal is the first volume of a projected two-volume study of Nepals economic history during the nineteenth century. As the title indicates, it limits itself to a study of agrarian relations. The second volume will deal with finance and trade.

This book has been written in the belief that if the men of the future are ever to break the chains of the present, they will have to understand the forces that forged them. Economic-development policies can be formulated and implemented effectively only if there is an adequate understanding of existing institutions, particularly agrarian institutions in countries such as Nepal.

The narrow social and territorial base of the Gorkhali leadership precluded the allegiance of subject populations and territories outside the heartland to the Gorkhali dhungo, such as the limbs of the eastern hill region, the thrush and other communities of the Tarai, and the inhabitants of territories beyond the Bheri river, such as Jumla, Doti, Kumaun and Garhwal.
