Fluff and the Magpies was inspired by observing the behaviours of squirrels and magpies and their obvious rivalry and conflicts where food is concerned. Even the characters Half-Tail Stumpy and Dagwood are modelled on actual animals Jay has seen regularly in his gardens.

The book is the sequel to Fluff and the Magpies. It tells the story of Fluff and Stumpy, two chums who venture a little too far out of their usual habitat after being chased by their nemesis, Dagwood, the black cat. The ensuing adventure is about their subsequent encounter and capture by a gang of pirate parrots and their escape back to the safety of Windy Nook.
