Henry David Thoreau (12.7.1817 - 6.5.1862) war ein amerikanischer Philosoph und Schriftsteller. Thoreau gilt heute als eine der markantesten Gestalten der klassischen amerikanischen Literatur. In seinem 1854 veröffentlichten Werk „Walden. Oder das Leben in den Wäldern“ beschrieb Thoreau seine Zeit in der Natur, er integriert in dem Buch aber auch Themen wie Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft.

Nach drei frühen Gedichten über den Himmelskörper hat sich Henry David Thoreau dem Mond und seinem Schein vor allem in seiner kleinen Studie "Night and Moonlight" (veröffentlicht 1863) zugewandt, die hier erstmals als eigenständiger, mit Anmerkungen versehener Text auf Deutsch vorliegt.
