When we see a quilt, we instantly want to wrap ourselves on it, cozy up on the couch with a mug of steaming hot cocoa, read that book we've been planning to read or catch our favorite TV show that's on airtime.
The most important thing you will need to do before attempting a try at quilting is to learn the basic steps of piecing, layering, quilting and binding. Piecing together pieces of fabric will help determine your quilt pattern. Layering involves putting together the top layer, the stuffing and the backing or underlining. Quilting is using various stitches and techniques to attach the three layers. Binding involves choosing a fabric to act as trimming to hide the tattered borders and fabric edges.
Start with simple patterns. Choose a simple block pattern and use three or four colors to start out with. The intricate, more elaborate patterns with multi-colors will need to wait awhile -when you've gotten the hang of the skill.
You will need to pre-wash your fabrics to loosen up the threads. Just wash it, let it dry out completely, iron it and then you can start cutting into smaller pieces. Pre-washing will help prevent shrinkage and discoloration. Cotton fabrics and linens especially need to be pre-washed as their fibers are tightly knitted.
A quilt just exudes warmth and comfort. It's a great gift to give to yourself or someone special. It's easy to make, if you know how to sew, then you can put together pieces of fabric to make your own design.
