Tabby Long is a modern-day, 14-year-old non-Christian who attends a Catholic school. On Good Friday, her father is miraculously healed of the eye disease that was leading to blindness. He has an immediate conversion to Christ, something that causes a rift with his wife and pushes Tabby to investigate how her father has come to faith.

At the suggestion of her religion teacher, Tabby follows the Ignatian Spirituality practice of inserting oneself into the stories of Sacred Scripture. In doing so, she envisions herself in Jerusalem when Jesus is crucified. She imagines herself to be Tabitha Longinus, the daughter of Centurion Longinus, the soldier who crucifies Christ, pierces his heart with a lance, and experiences an immediate healing of his eye disease, causing him to exclaim, "Truly, this was the Son of God."

In her imagined life in Biblical times, Tabitha navigates the choppy waters her family treads following her father's conversion at the foot of the cross. Eventually, she finds herself alone in Jerusalem, beset by tragedy, and in danger as she is pursued by a Temple guard who wants to arrest her. But she is not deterred from learning about the source of her father's faith and exploring whether the crucified and risen Lord is beckoning her to follow Him, too.
