“There really is no choice involved! The two of you must do this whether you like it or not, and we are actually here to turn over our duties to you.”

The older woman's voice was almost trembling now, and looking on the faces of the other elders, Elena could not help but feel the undercurrent of panic they were all trying to control.

She realized that on their recent meetings with them, they had been trying to shield this from her with magick, something Council members would have practiced reverently as part of their tasks in handling their obligations well. They were almost palpable now that she was almost choking with the thickness of it, so they must really have been shielding well.

The only other person who did not seem part of the whole picture of graveness was Adair, who was sighing as her eyes rolled to the ceiling. As if she was finding the situation too dramatic to her taste.

Elena decided Adair was too worthless to be bothersome.

The older woman sighed heavily, and talked further in a grave voice. “There is something else of great importance that you both need to know.”

“What else is it, Augusta?” Albert asked.

This time, there was fear in Augusta's old eyes. “Something very bad is headed our way. None of us have been able to see clearly what it is, but we have all felt its hatred towards us and the evil it intends to use. The only way that we can successfully defeat it is through the union of a Soul Mate King and Queen."
